Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.

The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then discovered numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Police report preliminary tests show the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the residents for details.

An important representative commented the vandalism left him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
